The beginnings…
My extended family consists of a lot of pop and alternative/indie musicians. My immediate family, not so much . . .
However, my mom still wanted me to be involved with music. As a result, I ended up being enrolled in a lot of music lessons throughout my childhood. I was an “instrument dolphin,” if you will—hopping from one instrument to another as hobbies with no real commitment. My musical path was anything but clear at the start.
However, everything changed when I started middle school.
I was introverted and I hated talking to people. The thought of being in multiple classes without any friends was terrifying and the fact that I had no control over who got to be in my classes, was the worst!...until I found a way to "beat the system".
One day, my friends told me they were planning on joining the orchestra, so you know what that means--I have to be in orchestra!
“I’ll just quit once I enter high school! There’s no need for it beyond eighth grade!” I thought to myself.
Next thing you know, I’m playing in my high school orchestra, my local youth orchestra, and in chamber groups. One summer, when I participated in the Idyllwild Arts Symphony Orchestra Intensive, I decided to commit my life to music. The feeling of playing with other musicians while working hard to perfect my craft brought so much life and inspiration for me.
