When I first dabbled with music…
Thanks to my grandma’s frustrated dreams of learning piano, she made sure I had the musical training she wished she had. Lucky for her, I actually LOVED my twice a week, hour-long piano lessons with a private teacher!
I enjoyed learning music so much that I even picked up the guitar and taught myself chords before and after my piano lessons.
I didn’t have voice lessons as a child but that didn’t keep me from starting off as a soloist and psalmist for my church’s Children’s Choir. I discovered my love for singing by being in the choir!
I continued singing and performing in school productions, community events and competitions and always placed first and second. I even recorded a commercial jingle that aired on the radio when I was 11.
When it became more than just dabbling…
I thought I was going to do what any kid who wanted to be a lawyer did. (*cough* Mr. Andy) I first started as a Political Science major who also took the Group Voice class offered for all majors for fun. My voice professor sought out my skills and wanted me to take on more opportunities in music and made me realize that I have the chance to cultivate my talents.
So here I am with a BA in Music with over 3 years of private and studio teaching experience.
I’ve performed classical solo and choral works as a soprano, with the opportunity of having sung Morten Lauridsen’s art songs after a week long workshop with him being a favorite.
Aside from performing and teaching, I also did a research titled “Filipino Folk and Art Songs: The Idiom of Filipino History and Experience” which was funded by UC Irvine and will be submitted for publication this year!
