The struggle is real!Teaching and running a music school, oftentimes, parents share their struggles with me: my child doesn’t like to practice; my child doesn’t seem to enjoy piano anymore; my relationship with my child is worsening because I'm making him practice.
Whenever I hear this I want to encourage them and cheer them up because that child was me growing up. In fact, I was probably even worse when it came to practice. But my mom didn't give up on me and I kept going (it was made clear to me that quitting wasn't an option). Now I want to help other parents and students on this journey moving forward as we learn together and support each other with some of the tools and strategies that have not only helped me but continue to help me enjoy and appreciate this wonderful skill! |
Look, what I've become!
Being a piano teacher was probably the last job I ever wanted. In fact, when I bumped into one of my old piano teachers when I started teaching she was shocked to find that I got my masters in piano performance (Thanks for the vote of confidence!)
So what changed?
Great teachers. The ones who understood and believed in me.
I had 10 piano teachers growing up (Yes, 10, you didn't read that wrong). My mom tried many teachers until #7, she cared about me--and I felt it.
My later teachers gave me LOTS of encouragement & patience; they changed me & helped me grow as a pianist. I want to give the same piano lessons to my students; lessons that help them find passion in music and joy through music.
I want to give my students a loving environment where we build good musicianship & work together in achieving their goals!
When you meet the right teacher, your love for music & developing musical skills increases! I discovered this 16 years into my piano studies, I hope to give this to my students from day 1 and guide them through the bumps and hurdles of this long journey.
I want to thank my teachers from #7 to #10: Ms. Emily, Ms. Fanny, Dr. Kolar, and Dr. Chou, who saw my potential and patiently worked with me. You are the reason that I am successful now.
