The beginnings…
When I started my piano journey, it didn’t take long for my first teacher to simply hand me pieces along with taped recordings.
I learned music not by reading it but by listening to the recordings. As a result, when I moved to the United States in middle school, I began the grueling process of relearning music. All of my teachers since then were relentless, spending hours ensuring that I understood how to count, recognize accidentals, and read notes.
From this experience, I have come to value progress over perfection and excellence over perfection. This journey has also allowed me to understand some of the challenges students may face when learning music and to develop various “tricks and strategies” to help them learn.
I believe that connecting with students, understanding their needs, and considering the parents’ perspectives are key to making progress. Clear communication and celebrating small wins along the learning curve are essential to the journey as well.
